Using a Conservatory as an office

Friday June 26, 2009 at 9:41am

If your intention is to use your new conservatory as a home office, there are a few things to consider. The obvious one is security - as by its nature the home office would contain computers, printers and other valuable items. Prior self build conservatories come with full security locking as standard, and our locks are all approved by the British Insurance companies standards, and are also all BS approved.

Next to think about is privacy. If you are working at night, or on a sunny afternoon, do you want your neigbours looking in on you at work? Many types of conservatory blinds can be fitted, from the traditional Venetian to more exotic bamboo or organic fabric varieties. Of course, there in nothing to stop you using traditional curtains on poles - the choice is yours.

On very hot days, the heat buildup can be rapid if the roof is not chosen carefully. On South facing conservatories, a heatguard polycarbonate roof deals well with this or on a glass roof, the choice of blue antisun glass will cut out glare and excessive heat. All of these options are available from Prior Conservatories, as are the opening roof vents. These may be manually operated, electrically via a switch, or fully automatic with a weather sensor. These will detect a build up of heat and open automatically, but in the event of rain coming, they will sense this and close again. Of course, we can always supply your new self build conservatory with an air conditioning unit - warm in winted and cool in summer.

Electrics are something else to think about. You will need a telephone line installed. Depending on the positions of your existing BT sockets, you could run an extension cable, or ask BT to install a new permanent line. You will also need power for lighting and 13 amp sockets. Installing the mains supply is not something you are allowed to do unless you are a registered electrician. Since 2005, and wiring in or around the house is 'notifiable' and must be installed by a qualified contractor.

After all of these points have been addressed, you will have your own space to work in as you please - a room with a view!
